Es ist wieder Zeit für die Sommersonnenwende und Finnland und Skandinavien bereiten sich auf das Traditionsfest, den Mittsommer, wo die Sonne nicht untergeht. Am 26. Juni sind die Städte leer, die meisten Leute verbringen den Tag auf dem Lande am See mit ihrer Familie und Freunden. Es wird gefeiert, gegessen und getrunken. Neben Essen und Trinken gehört zum Mittsommer in Finnland Sauna mit Birkenquast, das Johannisfeuer und frische Wiesenblumen zur Tischdekoration oder auf dem Kopf, denn traditionell haben unverheiratete Frauen Wiesenblumen gepflückt und sie zu einem Kranz geflochten und als Haarschmuck getragen.
Leinentextilien beispielsweise von Lapuan Kankurit sind ideal für die heissen Sommertage. Die Badetücher fühlen sich herrlich weich an der Haut an und die leichten, luftigen Decken wirken kühlend in der Nacht.
It’s time of the year when Finland and Scandinavia are preparing for the traditional festival, Midsummer, where the sun doesn’t set. On June 26th the cities are empty and most people spend the day in the countryside by the lake with their family and friends. There is celebration, eating and drinking. Besides food and drink, Midsummer in Finland includes saunas with birch tassels, the Midsummer bonfire (juhannuskokko) and fresh meadow flowers for table decoration or as headdress, because traditionally unmarried women picked meadow flowers and wove them into a wreath and wore them as hair ornaments.

Life in summer takes place mainly outdoors. Not only at Midsummer, but generally in summer, the table is beautifully decorated with fresh flowers. Sauna gehört zur finnischen Kultur und es ist ein wichtiges Element der Lebensqualität. Anders als hier in Mitteleuropa ist die Sauna in Finnland ein Ort fürs Zusammensein und erlaubt ist alles, was gut tut. Hier redet man miteinander, peitscht und massiert sich selbst oder gegenseitig mit einem Quast aus Birkenzweigen, was sehr heilsames Erlebnis sein kann. Zum Abkühlen springt man in den See. Am Abend wird dann das Johannisfeuer (juhannuskokko) angezündet, was ebenfalls eine alte Tradition in Finnland ist.
Sauna is part of Finnish culture and it is an important element of quality of life. Unlike here in Central Europe, the sauna in Finland is a place for being together and everything that is good for you is allowed. In sauna people talk to each other, whip and massage themselves or each other with a tassel made of birch twigs, which can be a very healing experience. To cool off, you jump into the lake. In the evening, the bonfire (juhannuskokko) is lit, which is also an old tradition in Finland.
